Built-in vs Surface-Coated Antistatic Sheets for Thermoforming

For thermoformed packaging, the difference between built-in antistatic material and a surface-applied antistatic coating matters most after forming and during the intended service period. Compare actual grades under equivalent conditions.

Where the Antistatic Function Comes From

A surface-coated sheet relies on treatment at the surface. Built-in antistatic PP and PET incorporate the functionality into the material.

Performance Duration

Yuanle specifies three-year antistatic performance for its built-in products under the applicable grade and conditions. The conventional surface-coated products used as Yuanle’s comparison reference typically retain their antistatic function for around six months to one year. This comparison is not a universal lifetime specification for every coating: formulation, environment, handling and use conditions matter.

Performance After Thermoforming

Substantial stretching may affect a surface coating and cause electrical performance to change at the stretched locations. Yuanle’s built-in approach maintains antistatic functionality in stretched areas. Validate the finished part, including corners and sidewalls, using the required test method and acceptance limits.

Temperature Performance Is a Separate Requirement

Yuanle’s heat-resistant antistatic PET has undergone third-party laboratory testing as empty thermoformed trays at 82°C for 24 hours, with no deformation under the tested conditions. Conductive PP is offered with high-temperature performance at 90°C and low-temperature performance at −40°C under the tested conditions; request test durations and criteria.

The result for an empty test tray does not establish the performance of every loaded package. Confirm the grade, thickness, geometry, temperature exposure and load for your application. Do not treat every coated PET grade as having the same deformation temperature.
